Hooligans Caravan to the Great White North! (part 1)

And off we went..... yes, we did manage to get it all packed, find the lost radios, and get ourselves out the door by 7am on Mon. the 22 of Dec. These trips are always an adventure, between icy toilet seats in remote rest stops, and the variability of road conditions in December. Well, it was all fun, and even with all the storms and snow up in the NW quadrant of the country, we had mostly good roads the whole way. We left in drizzly weather, and added Kathy and John to the Caravan up in Rosamond.

we were intrigued by this tree/bush thing at the gas station there, so felt compelled to photograph it.

a rainbow was a nice way to start the trip !

Luning?
I *think* this is our "favorite" rest stop south of Bishop....Luning, CA: middle of nowhere, always cold howling wind in December. We've unanimously voted it the coldest bathroom stop on the trip bar none. There is always a line of sorts (why?????this is the middle of *nowhere*!), and we always seem to end up having to stop here. Will we hooligans never learn to not drink anything a half hour before luning? So we obligatorily froze our tushies off........ again.

We stopped for lunch at the McDs in Bishop, and were greeted by this LARGE token of holiday spirit. The reindeer went up and down...it was sort of cute, and sort of hideous at the same time. Ben was intrigued by the fish......

tho, why McDs had a fish is beyond me..... anyway, the rest of the day was spent traipsing through the Nevada wilderness....Hawthorne, Fallon.....all the way up to Winnemucca. Pretty bleak landscape. There was some roadside snow pretty much the whole way, but not on the road. Winemucca was coooold, and the parking lot of the motel was very icy and snowy. It snowed a bit overnight, so Mark had to scrape the windshield for the first time. This is actually my Dad's car he's scraping...

Here we all are ready to take off for Oregon & Idaho. Kathy took this pic.

Thats John, Cami, Tabitha, Alex, Mark, Ben, Me, Kendra......

We fairly soon...meaning by the time we were into the SE corner of Oregon.....ran into snowy yet drivable (they use sand/gravel) roads sort of like this:

and they were like this for miles..........pretty much all the way through the corner of OR. Coming into Idaho, the terrain drops pretty sharply into the wide river valley where Boise is. There was snow everywhere, gradually getting deeper, but the roads were clearer than OR. By the way that is Mom and Dad C's car up there in front of us. Kathy and John were ahead of them. Our communication system this trip was a bit flawed. We all have 2 way radios (of rather dubious quality we've discovered....), so theoretically, as long as we are all tuned to the same channel, things should work fine, right??? Well, originally (say 6 or so years ago), *we* had 2 radios, Mom and Dad had 2 radios...etc. This time around, I could only find 1 of our original radios, Kathy and John only had 1, and Mom and Dad had their 2. We quickly discovered that *my* radio was the only one that could communicate with Kathy's radio. Fortunately Mom and Dad had 2 radios, so I kept one of them, and whenever Mom needed to say something to Kathy and John, I had to relay the message on the other radio. Very efficient. Oh well, it worked. Topics of radio conversation, on the most essential level, generally focused on bathroom stops, gas stops, and food stops. But digressions occur....."Dad, you can turn your blinker off now...", "Oh look there's that giant *thing* in the middle of the desert again!", "Kathy, how cold is it now? (they had an outside temp. guage in their car)", (Kathy to Kayleen)"Could you tell Dad that it's illegal to pass on a double yellow line????!!!....AAAAAHHHHH!!"......and the like. Thus, we made it through wet, dirty,

occasionally snowy

roads to McCall in good form. We snuck in between storms, and it was beginning to snow lightly when we arrived.
