LA JOLLA COVE
We spent Thursday hitting the beaches! First was La Jolla Cove, a marine preserve where the water is really clear for snorkling, and there are lots of Geribaldi fish and other misc. sea creatures. The weather cooperated yet again, giving us a beautiful sunny day. In true hooligan fashion we accidentally left the masks and snorkles at home in the hurried transition from big car to little car, so everyone swapped Kendra's swim goggles around. As you'll see, there were LOTS of snorklers there. One lady was feeding peas to the fish, so there were plenty of them around to see. What a beautiful spot! After swimming for quite awhile, we ate lunch on the immaculate lawn of the Bridge Club (ooh la la), hoping there weren't any Bridge police around to chase us off, then poked around some of the rocky areas just south of the cove.
CORONADO BEACH
Around 3 we left La Jolla and went back south to San Diego and over the bridge to Coronado Island. We drove by the famous "Hotel Del", but went a little further south to access the beach. I would have liked Coronado Beach better if there hadn't been so much seaweed. It is everywhere! On the plus side, however, the sand was beautiful (like walking on flour, with little sparkles in it...interesting), and the water was oh-so-warm. This is where the kids really missed having the boogie boards. Oh well....couldn't be helped. Ben is usually a little cautious about venturing out "too too" far, but the warm water turned him into an animal. He had a great time going way out & body surfing (or trying to). The girls swam some, but were a bit grossed out by all the seaweed in the water. They spent more time playing in the sand (yes, even teenagers play in the sand......at least hooligan ones do :o) ). Mark built some strange layered sand/seaweed structure. When Ben finally had enough swimming he tried sliding down the stair railing, which was interesting to watch because you just can't get a good slide with wet drawers. I gave him an "A" for effort, though. Also, the famous hooligan-scavenging instinct kicked in, and he found a nice sand mold to play with, in the garbage can on the beach. Score!!
